In 2009, me and 6 friends divided the days of the week between us and started making a weekly Top 5 each. After a few months we also started a blog, where we wrote a few lines about our choices. Since the start of that blog, til the start of this one, I've made 170 such lists. As the others dropped out one by one, I decided to transfer the project to my own blog, and author it in English instead, on the offchance that more people than myself might be interested in my musical indulgence.
I've never been able to keep a traditional diary for long, but this weekly chronicling by the way of songs has become an obsessive and satisfying ritual. Every Monday (or thereabouts) I list 5 tracks that I've listened to during the previous week. Mostly it's just 5 of my fav songs I've heard that week. Quite often they seem to sum up my general mood or thoughts at the time. Sometimes they're connoted to specific things happening, and at times I even set out consciously to trace a theme. I try to sequence them as best I can, and while certain artists frequently reappear, I try to avoid listing the same songs repeatedly. I aim to be honest and open about my choices; my music taste is at times ridiculously eclectic and hopefully relatively untainted by notions of snobbism and trends. I'd hate to think I censored my lists to project a certain image of myself.
All lists can be listened to on Spotify, and every week I add the preceding week's Top 5 to the ever-expanding archive-list. The use of Spotify is a matter of convenience; it was there we started the listmaking and despite certain reservations about this application I'm too comfortable to make a break from it. Maybe I will consider changing platform to something more politically defendable if it turns out I actually have readers who pay any sort of mind.
